Recipes are made at a station you build and place, or by hand. Any craft also draws on your tent's stash when you stand within 5 m of your tent or a homestead bed, and on homestead chests near you. Weapons, spell cards and dynamite are made at your level: their materials change by level band, one band per island. Graded recipes can be made better than Uncommon by adding gems and rarer materials:
