Talk

  1. “I'm Hattie. General store. Tents, sticks, cloth, the whole business. People ask what's general about it. Everything. That's the general part.”
  2. “You came over from the ash, didn't you? I can tell. You've got that look. The look of somebody who just found out the sun still works.”
  3. “Out here you'll want a tent. Nights get cold. People don't believe that about the desert. Then the night comes and they believe it. Real fast.”
  4. “I'll buy what you bring in. Not for much. I've got a store full of things nobody needs already. I'm not looking to add to it. But I will.”
  5. “My husband built this store with his own two hands. Then he went out to the crypt on the far side with his own two hands. Came back with one. Store's still standing, though.”

Shop greetings

  • “General store. A little bit of everything, and a lot of sand on all of it.”
  • “Back again. Wipe your boots. Doesn't help. But it's the gesture.”

Quips

After you buy

  • “There you go. Sand's free. Comes with everything.”
  • “Pleasure doing business. Mostly the business part.”

When you can't afford it

  • “You're short. Everybody out here is short on something. Water, mostly. You're short on gold. Which, around here, is a nice change.”

When your bag is full

  • “Your bag's full. I'd tell you to travel light, but nobody comes this far with a light bag.”

After you sell

  • “I'll take it. Can't promise I'll sell it. Folks out here don't buy much. They mostly just squint.”

When it is sold out

  • “Gone. More tomorrow. The wagon comes in every morning. Well. The wagon's broken. But the stock comes in.”

When they don't buy it

  • “I can't give you anything for that. I've looked at it from every side. It's worthless from all of them.”

When you walk off mid-sentence

  • “Well, fine. I'll finish that for somebody who stays. Nobody stays.”
  • “Where I'm from we'd call that rude. Out here we call it a customer.”
  • “Go on, then. Door's that way. There's no door. It's a stall. Point stands.”
