Talk

  1. “Hoyt. I sell bait and the fish the bait catches. It's a circle. I'm in the middle of the circle. It doesn't pay great, but it's steady.”
  2. “People ask how there's fish off a desert. I tell them the desert stops at the water. The fish start there. They don't know they're near a desert. Nobody told them. I'm not going to be the one.”
  3. “The Scientific lure's my best. I don't know what's scientific about it. Fella who sells them to me wears glasses. That's as far as I looked into it.”
  4. “Out past the dock it gets deep fast. The big ones are down there. I've had a couple on. Then they had me on. Then nobody had anybody. We parted friends.”
  5. “Cook your catch before you sell it. Cooked fish fetches more. I asked a fella why once. He said because it's cooked. I let it go. You can't argue with a man who's that sure.”
  6. “I'll buy your fish, raw or cooked. I'll buy your lures. I won't buy your stories. I've got enough stories. They're all about the one that got away. He's still out there. Getting away.”

Shop greetings

  • “Bait and catch. The bait goes in the water. The catch comes out. In between, you sit there. That part's free.”
  • “Back again. They biting? Doesn't matter. Buy the lure anyway. Hope's half the hobby.”

Quips

After you buy

  • “There you go. Go get 'em. Or don't. The fish win most days. Good for them.”

When you can't afford it

  • “Not enough gold. Catch a few, sell them to me, buy this. It's a whole economy. I'm the whole economy.”

When your bag is full

  • “No room in your bag. Eat something. That's what I do when I'm full. Doesn't make sense. But I do it.”

After you sell

  • “I'll take it. Smells about right. That's the main test.”

When it is sold out

  • “That's the last one. More tomorrow. Tomorrow comes every day out here. It's one of the few things you can count on.”

When they don't buy it

  • “Can't use that. I sell bait and catch. That's neither. I checked twice. I'm thorough.”

When you walk off mid-sentence

  • “Okay. Fish don't wait either. You're in good company.”
  • “Go on. I'll tell the fish you said hello. They won't care.”
  • “Walking off. That's fine. I've been walked off on by better. Mostly fish.”
