Talk

  1. “Name's Ezra. I sell provisions. Sticks, mostly. Same sticks Hollis sells over in Meadowbay. Different sticks. Same idea.”
  2. “People come out here and ask why anybody'd live somewhere this dead. I tell them the rent's cheap. It's free, actually. Fella who owned the place is in the yard over there.”
  3. “You'll want a campfire tonight. The things that walk around out here don't care for fire. They don't care for much. But they care for fire least.”
  4. “I used to sell flowers. For the graves. Business was good. Then nothing grew anymore. Now I sell sticks. You go where the market is.”
  5. “I'll buy what you bring me. Not for much. It's a long way to Meadowbay and I'd have to carry it. I don't carry things. I'm a merchant.”
  6. “Everybody asks about the grey. Why it's all grey out here. I don't know. It was green when I got here. Then I got here. Make of that what you will.”

Shop greetings

  • “Provisions. Everything a person needs to stay alive out here, except a reason.”
  • “Back again. That's good. Most folks only come by the once.”

Quips

After you buy

  • “There you go. Use it in good health. Or whatever passes for it out here.”
  • “That's a fair price. I checked. With myself.”

When you can't afford it

  • “You're short. Gold, I mean. Out here everybody's short on something. You're short on gold. The widow's short a husband.”

When your bag is full

  • “Your bag's full. Drop something. Not here, though. It's a cemetery town. We've got enough lying around.”

After you sell

  • “I'll take it. Can't promise I'll sell it. Nobody comes out here. Well, you came out here. But you know what I mean.”

When it is sold out

  • “Gone. More tomorrow. If there's a tomorrow. There usually is. It's one of the few things you can count on out here.”

When they don't buy it

  • “I can't give you anything for that. Not even out of pity. I'm out of pity. Sold the last of it Tuesday.”

When you walk off mid-sentence

  • “Leaving in the middle. Most of my customers don't have that option.”
  • “Well. Go on. I'll see you again, one way or the other.”
  • “How rude. I'll make a note. I keep notes on everyone. It helps, later.”
