Dex, the Cinderhold lookout, says the mountain's been shaking since Tuesday. The lookout before him drew a gauge, three of them on the crater's rim over the lava rivers, and never got them up. Forge three, iron and a glass vial at a forge, and set them where his stakes are.
Steps
- Forge three vent gauges from the old lookout's drawing, iron and a glass vial at a forge, and set them on the crater's rim at his stakes, over the three lava rivers
- Keep the gauges on the rim standing until the eruption burns itself out. It comes after dark, once you're up there
- Tell Dex in Cinderhold the gauges held · Cinderhold
Reward
The old lookout's Fire Warden's Apron (lava and burning hurt you half as much), 500 gold and XP (

Dialogue
Starting it
- “You feel that? Under your boots. It's been doing that since Tuesday. Before that, it did it once in eleven years, and that time we lost the pier.”
- “Eleven years in this chair. I eat here. I sleep sitting up. I'm told there's a nice beach on the south side. I'll take their word for it.”
- “The fella who had the job before me drew up a gauge. Three of them on the rim, and you'd know a day early. He never got them built.”
- “Iron and a glass vial, at a forge. That's his drawing. He drew the needle twice. The second one's better. Use the second one.”
- “He went up to set them himself, one night. They found his hat. It's a good hat. I wear it on Sundays.”
- “Take the road to the rim. Over each of the three rivers there's a flat bit of ridge. You'll see a stake. He got that far.”
Talking to them again
- “Up on the rim, over the rivers. Three stakes. He put them in straight. Last straight thing anybody did up there.”
- “If it starts while you're up there, keep the needles standing. The rocks can't be helped. Neither could he.”
Handing it in
- “I heard it from here. Then I didn't. That second part's the one I've been waiting for.”
- “Hold on. There's something I've been meaning to do for eleven years.”
- “Huh. It works. Here. His apron. Fireproof. He left it on the hook the night he went up. Should've worn it.”
When your bag is full
- “No room. That's all right. It's waited on that hook a long time. Another day won't hurt it.”
