- “I'm Dex. I watch the volcano. That's my job. Somebody's got to. If it ever goes off, I'm the one who tells everybody. I've got a bell. I've never rung it. I'm not sure it works. I'm afraid to check.”
- “Folks ask, what happens if it erupts? I say, well, then I ring the bell. They say, then what? I say, then I've done my job. After that it's sort of everybody for themselves.”
- “The rivers run down the west side. Stay on the road and you won't cross one. Leave the road and you'll cross one. It's a very short lesson. Some people only take it the once.”
- “There's an old stone arch over one of the rivers. Like a bridge. Nobody built it. The mountain just made it. People like to stand on it. I don't. I don't trust anything the mountain does for free.”
- “I came out here to get away from it all. Turns out, it all is very hot and comes out of the ground. You can't get away from that. You can only watch it. So I watch it.”
