Dialogue

Starting it

  1. “I was out here last night, minding my own business, which is fishing. Something bit. It took the bait, the hook, and my wedding ring.”
  2. “Don't ask me how a fish gets a ring off a man's finger. I've been married eleven years and I never managed it.”
  3. “I didn't get a good look at him. He was ugly. He had whiskers, like my wife's uncle. And he looked at me like he knew my wife.”
  4. “And he only bit after dark. All day, nothing. Then the sun goes down, and there he is. Like he works nights.”
  5. “So here's the job. Fish these waters at night, catch the ugly fella, and see if he coughs it up. Fish do that. So would I.”
  6. “Anywhere round the bay will do, after six at night. Bring the ring here. I'll be sitting on this pier. I'm always sitting on this pier.”

Handing it in

  1. “That's it. That's my ring. Where'd you find... no, don't tell me. I know where it's been. It's been in a fish.”
  2. “Hold on, it's engraved. My wife had it done. Let's see here. 'To Margaret... love Phil.'”
  3. “Huh. I'm not Phil. I've never been Phil. I've been Dell the whole time. I checked.”
  4. “Well. You did the job. Here, take my good lures. I won't need them. I think I'll go home early today. Have a little talk.”

After it is done

  1. “Margaret and I had a talk. Phil came up. Turns out Phil's her first husband. She says he's dead. That's what they all say.”
  2. “I wear the ring on a chain now. Not because it's precious. I just don't want it anywhere near the water.”

At the hand-in without the item

  1. “No ring? It's out there, in a fish. Ugly fella, whiskers, bites after dark. You'll know him. He'll look at you funny.”

When your bag is full

  1. “Your bag's full. I'd hold the lures for you, but I've been holding things for people. Look where it got me.”

again sold

  1. “You sold my ring to Dot. I asked her about it. She said it's not my ring. I said I know. She said then what's the problem.”

sold

  1. “Margaret left me for a man with a ring. Story of my life. Except it's the other guy's life.”
