Talk
- “Name's Vern. People say I look like Earl, from the town. I'm his brother. He's the handsome one. I'm the one who lives outside a crypt.”
- “There's a town out east. Meadowbay. Earl's got more knives than me, Hollis has got sticks, Dot's got fish. I've got what I could carry. Which, you can see, isn't a lot.”
- “Just head east. You'll hit the town or the sea. If it's the sea, you went too far. Turn around. Easy mistake. I've made it.”
- “Why sell out here? Location. Everybody going into that crypt needs a knife. Nobody coming out needs one. Well. Nobody coming out. That's the other thing.”
- “No guns. I don't carry guns. Fella with a gun told me once guns are the future. Then the Warden got him. So I don't know about the future. I know about the Warden.”
- “People ask, Vern, don't you get lonely out here? I say no. At night the skeletons come by. They're not much for talking. They mostly want to kill you. But out here you take what you can get.”
Shop greetings
- “Vern's. A knife, some knuckles, an axe. I call it a shop. Earl calls it a table.”
- “Everything's level one. Same as you, I'm guessing. No offence. I'm level one too. In life.”
Quips
After you buy
- “There you go. Go in there and hit something. That's the whole plan. It's not a good plan. But it's a plan.”
When you can't afford it
- “You're short. Go down in the crypt, find some gold, come back. That's what everybody does. Well. The first part.”
When your bag is full
- “Your bag's full. I'd hold something for you, but my hands are full. Standing, mostly.”
After you sell
- “I'll take it. Earl'd give you more for it in town. But Earl's not here. That's the thing about Earl.”
When it is sold out
- “That was the last one. More tomorrow. I walk to town, buy one off Earl, walk back. It's a family business. The family is Earl.”
When they don't buy it
- “I can't give you anything for that. I'm a trader. I'm not a museum.”
When you walk off mid-sentence
- “Oh. Well... that's rude. I was getting to the good part. There's no good part.”
- “Off you go, then. Earl does the same thing. It's a family trait, walking away from me.”
- “Okay then. I'll just stand here. It's what I do anyway.”
