Dialogue

Starting it

  1. “One of my scarecrows has started walking. A step a night, ever since I put the farm up for sale. I'm not saying those two things are connected. I'm just saying the timing's rude.”
  2. “Now, I'd watch it myself. I tried. Sat out there two nights with a lantern, and it didn't move an inch. The night I went to bed, off it went. So it's not shy. It's shy of me.”
  3. “So you sit out by it after dark. It doesn't know you. Come morning, find where it's got to, and sit by it again. I'd like to know where it's going before I sell the place out from under it.”
  4. “Have a good look at them now. My wife made all five. She could tell them apart. I never could. She said the same about my brothers.”

Talking to them again

  1. “It only goes at night. Never while you're looking. It's either shy or it's polite. I never could tell those two apart.”
  2. “Wherever it stood last, that's where you wait. It's not wandering, either. Wandering I'd understand. This one's got somewhere to be.”

Handing it in

  1. “That's a Brindle strongbox. That's my wife's. She buried it the year we had the good harvest. Never told me where.”
  2. “She must've known I'd sell up one day, and she didn't want it going with the land. So she told the scarecrow. They always did get along. He listened. I'm told that's the trick.”
  3. “Here. Take his hat. He walked all that way, he can stand bareheaded a while. He's earned the breeze.”

After it is done

  1. “He walked himself back to the row. No hat, facing the house. I took the farm off the market. I don't think he's up for another trip.”

At the hand-in without the item

  1. “It went somewhere, and you came back here. That's the opposite of following.”

When your bag is full

  1. “Your bag's full. I'd hold the hat for you, but it's been on a scarecrow. I've got standards. Low ones, but they're mine.”
