Dialogue

Starting it

  1. “Something's been emptying my traps. Not springing them. Emptying them. Bait gone, and the door latched shut behind it. Polite.”
  2. “I'd go after it myself. But forty years I've been trapping, and all I've caught is a cold and my own foot. Animals see me coming.”
  3. “There's white feathers on every trap. And up the mountain north of town, there's a nest that wasn't there in the fall. Big one.”
  4. “Go up and have a look at whatever's sitting in it. Take a gun. Whatever it is, it's figured out my latches. I haven't.”

Talking to them again

  1. “The nest's up the mountain, north of town. Keep climbing till it smells like fish. Up a mountain, that's how you know.”

Handing it in

  1. “What's that. An Order of the Birds. Signed by an albatross. I didn't know they could write. I didn't know they were organized.”
  2. “That's Sal's eviction. He's off the mountain. You know, I'll miss him. Not his face. The door. He always shut the door.”
  3. “Here's your money. And my hat. Keeps the cold off. Doesn't keep the birds off. Nothing does.”

After it is done

  1. “Traps stay full now. Of snow. Turns out Sal was the only thing that ever came near them.”
  2. “I started leaving a fish out anyway. Not for anybody. I just like having a reason to go outside.”

At the hand-in without the item

  1. “No order. Then that bird's still up there, and you're down here. That's the wrong way round.”

When your bag is full

  1. “Your bag's full. Make some room. I'm not handing a man a hat to hold in his teeth.”

gull first

  1. “Hey. You're the trapper's guy. Relax. Nobody's in trouble. Yet.”
  2. “Yeah, I eat out of his traps. He leaves fish in a box. In my neighborhood. That's not a trap. That's tribute.”
  3. “And I close the door after. Every time. You know why? Respect.”
  4. “Go tell him Sal says thanks for the fish. He'll understand. Or he won't. Either way, I'm eating.”

gull plead dawn

  1. “Whoa, whoa. Put that down. We're friends here. Mostly.”
  2. “This is a misunderstanding. Somebody else is eating out of those traps. Not me. A guy. A big guy.”
  3. “Meet me out on the frozen lake in the morning. Early. I'll introduce you. Bring the gun. Trust me.”

gull plead dusk

  1. “Whoa, whoa. Put that down. We're friends here. Mostly.”
  2. “This is a misunderstanding. Somebody else is eating out of those traps. Not me. A guy. A big guy.”
  3. “Meet me out on the frozen lake tonight, after dark. I'll introduce you. Bring the gun. Trust me.”

gull setup

  1. “You came. Alone. Out on the ice. Nobody around for miles. You don't watch a lot of movies, huh?”
  2. “Meet my cousin. He's from out of town. Nothing personal. It's just fish.”

ulf again

  1. “Shoot the bird. Don't let it talk first. The talking's how it got the fish.”

ulf kill

  1. “Tribute. A seagull told you my traps are tribute. And you walked all the way down a mountain to tell me.”
  2. “It's a trap. The animal's supposed to stay in it. That's the whole idea of the thing.”
  3. “Go back up and shoot it. I don't care what it calls itself.”
