Dialogue
Talking to them again
- “The deed is at Pete's hideout, out in the Sundown Barrens. Pete's dead. Don't let that relax you. It never relaxed him.”
- “Abe has the wheel. Ashen Landing, on the beach. Bring money. Bring more than you think. He's thought of that too.”
Handing it in
- “Is that my deed? And my wheel. You went to the Barrens, and you went to Abe. I don't know which one took more nerve.”
- “You know what my mother told me? Fergus, a casino is a terrible business. Then she won the house off my father at cards.”
- “Here's what we do. I go to Last Chance tonight. The doors open tomorrow. I know a band. They owe me money, so they'll play for free.”
- “And for you, every day, a hundred gold on the house. To gamble with. It always comes back to the house anyway. That's not a threat. That's arithmetic.”
At the hand-in without the item
- “No deed, no casino. I'd open without it, but then it's not a casino. It's a man in a stranger's building with a wheel.”
When your bag is full
- “Your bag's full. In my business, that's a good problem. In yours, I think it's just a problem.”
abe again
- “Tell Fergus his tab's paid. Then tell him there's a new tab. I'll be in touch.”
abe broke
- “Two hundred and fifty gold for the wheel. You haven't got it. I can always tell. It's a gift. Also, you're patting your pockets.”
abe full
- “Your bag's full. A roulette wheel doesn't fold. I've tried. It just makes it a worse wheel.”
abe wheel
- “Fergus's wheel? Yeah, I've got it. Took it for his bar tab. Best deal I ever made, and I once sold a man his own boat.”
- “Two hundred and fifty gold. I'd go lower, but then I'd think less of myself, and I'm running out of room down there.”
- “There you go. Spins lovely. Tell Fergus the ball's in the box. I almost kept the ball. Don't tell him that part.”
gift
- “Here. A hundred on the house. Go win it back from me. Or lose it back to me. Either way, it ends up right here.”
- “Your hundred. Count it if you like. I would. I wouldn't trust me either, and I'm very trustworthy.”
- “A hundred gold, on the house. The house can afford it. The house is me. I can't afford it. Take it anyway.”
gift done
- “You had your hundred today. Come back tomorrow. The house is generous. It's not stupid. Mostly generous.”
- “One a day. That's the rule. I made it the day I opened, and I've only ever broken it for myself.”
story
- “You read the sign. Nobody reads the sign. The Lucky Strike, in Last Chance. That was mine. Still is, in my heart. Not on paper.”
- “I told you I lost it in a bet to myself. That's the short version. The long version has outlaws in it.”
- “I played poker with the Dusty Pete gang. Bet the deed on three kings. Pete had four. I said, nobody has four kings. He said, I do. Outlaws. They bring their own deck.”
- “So I need two things back before the bank sells it. The deed, and my roulette wheel. A casino with no wheel is just a room where people lose money slowly.”
- “The deed is with Pete. Pete and his boys died out at their hideout. They still guard it. Death doesn't stop an outlaw. It just slows him down.”
- “The wheel, I sold to Abe for my bar tab. He'll want money for it. He always wants money. It's the one thing about Abe you can count on.”
- “The hideout is out in the Sundown Barrens, past Last Chance. Abe is on the beach at Ashen Landing. Bring both back here. I'll be in front of my house. It's still not a nice house.”
