How to Survive

Cliff Fairweather, Ziggy's cousin, camps on a bluff outside Cinderhold. He lent you a camera for the family book's last chapter: five of the Cinder Isle's landmarks, at night, lit by the lava. The hole the island's built around, the Cinder Cone, the rocks that came out in columns, the stepping stones on the lava, and the rock arch over the lava river. Then show them to him.

Dialogue

Starting it

  1. “Name's Cliff. Ziggy's cousin. Ziggy says I'm reckless. Ziggy's shot four thousand sunsets. The sun's ninety million miles away. Real brave.”
  2. “The family's making a book, an island a chapter. Mine's the last one. This island, lit by its own lava, at night. And I've got no pictures.”
  3. “I'd go myself. Last trip up the cone, my camera melted. The trip before, my shoes. I'm running out of things that don't melt. I'm mostly what's left.”
  4. “So you go. Here's a camera. It's never been up there. That's the secret to a camera not melting. You keep it away from me.”
  5. “I need five. The hole the whole island's built around. And the Cinder Cone, the little one, still mad about something.”
  6. “The rocks that came out in columns, like they were in a hurry. And the stepping stones over the lava. Take a picture. Don't take a step.”
  7. “And the rock arch over the lava river. Nature built a bridge, then put lava under it. Nature's got a sense of humour. It's not a nice one.”
  8. “At night, mind. After dark the lava lights them up. In the daytime it's just rocks. Then come back up here and show me. I'll be the one not on fire.”

Talking to them again

  1. “The hole, the cone, the columns, the stepping stones, the arch. At night. I'd write it down for you, but the paper keeps catching.”
  2. “Ziggy called. Asked if I'd gone up yet. I said I sent somebody. He said that's the bravest thing I've ever done. He meant it as an insult.”

Handing it in

  1. “Let's see. The caldera. Look at that glow. That's the whole island down there, thinking about it.”
  2. “The Cinder Cone. Still steaming. I knew a fella like that. He's fine now. He's a tree.”
  3. “The Basalt Bluffs. Lined up like they're waiting for a bus. Lava doesn't run a bus. They'll learn.”
  4. “Ember Ford. And you didn't take a step. I can tell, because you've got feet.”
  5. “The Span. Nobody's ever walked across that. Plenty of folks have started to.”
  6. “That's the chapter. Here, my old lens, for your trouble. These are hot. Don't touch them. I'm kidding. Don't touch them, though.”

After it is done

  1. “Sent the pictures to Ziggy. He says they're too red. I said that's the lava. He said that's what he was afraid of.”
  2. “Eyebrows grew back again this morning. Fourth time. I'm starting to think they want to see the next chapter.”

If you lose the item

  1. “One's gone. You threw it out? That's all right. The island's still there. It's not going anywhere. That's the one thing it's never done.”

When your bag is full

  1. “Your bag's full. I'd hold it for you, but things I hold have a way of melting. Make some room.”

day

  1. “In the daytime it's just rocks. Hot rocks. Still rocks.”
