How to Survive

Raven Fairweather, Ziggy's cousin, keeps a tripod on a rise in the Hollow March and only shoots ruins in the last bad light of the day. He lent you a camera: photograph the West Isle's five grim landmarks for the family book, the house nobody's moved out of, a church that went for a swim, Gallows Hill, the Spires out in the Ashen Waste and something big that died lying down. At dusk or after dark. Then show him.

Dialogue

Starting it

  1. “Name's Raven. Ziggy's cousin. Ziggy shoots sunsets. A sunset is the sun going down, which is fine. I shoot what's left after.”
  2. “We're making a family book, an island each. Ziggy did his in one summer. I've been on this one nine years. I've got a lot of almost.”
  3. “Thing is, the ghosts out here like me. Every picture I take, there's somebody standing in the back. Nine years of family portraits. None of it family.”
  4. “So you take them. You'll need a camera for that, so here. It's never seen anything nice. Let's keep it that way.”
  5. “I need five. The house nobody's moved out of. A church that went for a swim. And Gallows Hill.”
  6. “The Spires, out in the Ashen Waste. And something big that died out there, lying down. Get all of it in. It would want that.”
  7. “Shoot them in the last bad light of the day. After the sun gives up. Before that it's just postcards. Nobody frames a postcard.”
  8. “Then come back up here and show me. I'll be here. I'm usually here. That's the other thing the ghosts like about me.”

Talking to them again

  1. “The manor, the abbey, Gallows Hill, the Spires and the bones. In the last bad light. Any earlier and they look like they're doing fine.”
  2. “You can't rush dusk. I tried once. It just got dark on me. Which, to be fair, is what I asked for.”

Handing it in

  1. “The manor. Look at that. Not one window lit, and you can still tell somebody's home.”
  2. “The abbey. They built it for God and the sea took it. I don't think either one of them asked.”
  3. “Gallows Hill. And nobody standing in the back. That's a first. Maybe they were shy. Maybe they liked you.”
  4. “The Spires. Nothing grows out there. Nothing even tries. I respect that in a place.”
  5. “And the bones. Something that big, and it still went lying down. There's a lesson in that. I'm not going to learn it.”
  6. “That's the chapter. Here, my old lens. Everything you shoot through it comes out wrong. Which is to say, right.”

After it is done

  1. “Ziggy's gonna say they're too dark. They're supposed to be too dark. That's the whole thing.”
  2. “Nine years, and the chapter's done. Ziggy wants a second edition. I told him I'm still getting over the first.”

If you lose the item

  1. “One of them's gone. You threw it out? That's all right. They're used to being forgotten. Go take it again.”

When your bag is full

  1. “Your bag's full. I'd hold onto the camera for you, but things I hold onto tend to stay.”

too cheerful

  1. “Too cheerful.”
