Dusty Fairweather, Ziggy's cousin, has a camera the size of a stove on a rise west of Last Chance and won't carry it anywhere. He lent you a small one: photograph the Desert Isle's five landmarks for the family book, the big flat one like a table nobody came to, the arch where a wagon broke down, Devil's Gate, the Salt Pan and the Boneyard. At high noon, sun up top, under a clear sky. Then show him.

Dialogue
Starting it
- “Name's Dusty. Ziggy's cousin. Ziggy says the light out here's too harsh. Ziggy wears sunglasses indoors. Ziggy doesn't get a vote.”
- “We're making a family book, an island each. I've got the desert. All of it at high noon. The honest hour. No shadows to hide behind.”
- “I'd shoot it myself. But this camera weighs ninety pounds. I carried it out here in 1994. I'm not carrying it anywhere else. It lives here now. I visit it.”
- “So you take them. Here's a camera. The little kind. It's a real camera that gave up and moved to the city.”
- “Five places. The big flat one, like God set a table and nobody came. And an arch with a broken wheel under it, where a wagon quit.”
- “Devil's Gate. Two big rocks with nothing in between. And the Salt Pan. White, flat, looks like snow. Isn't.”
- “And the Boneyard. Whatever's in it came out here for a short trip. And it got one.”
- “Shoot them at noon. Sun right on top. No dust in the air, no rain. The sun's out here every day, but it's only honest for a few hours.”
- “Then bring them back up here. I'll be here. The camera'll be here. One of us is going somewhere eventually, and it's not the camera.”
Talking to them again
- “The big flat table, the wheel arch, Devil's Gate, the Salt Pan and the Boneyard. At noon. Sun right on top of them, like a cop with a flashlight.”
- “Noon's the only honest hour. Morning's too hopeful. Evening's got an agenda.”
Handing it in
- “Red Table. Look at that. Set for dinner since the dawn of time, and still nobody showed. I know the feeling. I've thrown parties.”
- “The arch. Some fella's wagon gave out right there. He's not in the picture. He walked. Smart. I'd have stayed with the wagon.”
- “Devil's Gate. Wide open. That's how you know it's his. Anybody else would've put a lock on it.”
- “The Salt Pan. See? Looks like snow. Isn't. A fella tried to sled down it once. Once.”
- “The Boneyard. Nobody in there's ever complained. Not once. Easiest crowd on the island.”
- “You held it level? You'd be the first. My last assistant shot the whole desert at an angle. I sold it as a series about drinking.”
- “Here. My old hood. Throw it over the camera, and everything comes out the color of 1994. Which was mostly this color.”
After it is done
- “Ziggy saw the pictures. Said they were too bright. I said, that's the sun, Ziggy. He said he knows. He's met it.”
- “Book's coming along. Raven's chapter came out so dark, the printer called to ask if he was all right.”
If you lose the item
- “One of them's gone. You threw it out? Well, the desert's still there. Nothing out there goes anywhere. That's what makes it a desert.”
When your bag is full
- “Your bag's full. I'd hold the camera for you, but I've already got one I can't put down.”
dust
- “That's dust. You took a picture of dust. I've got forty of those. Nobody's ever asked to see one.”
shadows
- “Shadows. Shadows are lies.”
