Talk
- “Name's Amos. I watch the north. Somebody has to. Nothing's ever come from the north. That's how I know I'm doing a good job.”
- “Up there, past the water, there's a whole island of snow. Mountains. A town called Rimeholt. Cold folks. Not unfriendly. Just cold. You'd be cold too, living on ice. I'd be cold here if I could manage it.”
- “Inland a little way, east, there's the last crypt on this island. Something in there's got guns where it ought to have manners. Clear it and you'll know the way north. It's on the map, after. That's how it works out here. You earn the map.”
- “Back east is Last Chance. Saloon, casino, a church with a piano. Lot of town. Too much town for me. I like a town you can see all of from one bench. This is that town.”
- “Wes on the dock gives out boats to folks who know how they're built. He sleeps a lot. Don't wake him. Well, wake him. But do it gently. He's got a temper. It's a slow temper. But you'll see it coming for days.”
- “Marla sells everything. Hoyt sells fish. Wladyslaw plays the piano in the church. I sit here and watch the north. Between us we've got the place covered. Except the south. Nobody watches the south.”
When you walk off mid-sentence
- “Go ahead. I'll keep an eye on the north for you. Nothing ever comes from the north.”
- “Leaving. Sure. I'll be here. The bench is comfortable. That's not a recommendation. It's a warning.”
- “Off you go. Mind the snakes. They mind you plenty.”
