How to Survive

Townsfolk (widow) · Big island (Wraith Isle, west end), Gallows Rest (seated).

Talk

  1. “I'm the Widow Pell. Folks call me that because I'm a widow and my name's Pell. People out here aren't very creative. It's the grey. It gets into you.”
  2. “That's the islet out there. Wraith Isle. There's a manor on it with a man in it who raises the dead. My husband went over to complain about the noise. That was eleven years ago. I assume he's still complaining.”
  3. “There's four crypts under the old ruins on this island. The deeper you go, the worse it gets. That's true of crypts. It's true of most things. Marriage, for one.”
  4. “When you kill the thing at the bottom of a crypt, it drops a scrap of map to the next one. Somebody went to a lot of trouble setting that up. I'd like a word with them. Several words.”
  5. “Past the islet, west over the water, there's supposed to be an island where nothing lives. No Man's Land. I've never been. I've never been anywhere. But I've heard about it, and frankly that's enough.”
  6. “And past that, they say, there's a place all sand and sun and men in big hats. Wild Waters. Sounds terrible. All that sun. You can't see a thing. Out here at least you know where you stand. In the fog.”
  7. “Silas will sell you a weapon matched to your strength. He'll measure you while you're there, too. Don't take it personally. He measures everybody. He measured me at my wedding.”
  8. “Mags sells fish. Ezra sells sticks. Silas sells weapons and graves. I sit. Somebody has to. It isn't glamorous. But somebody has to.”

More talk

  1. “My husband used to say the world ended a long time ago, and this is what they built out of what was left. A set, he called it. Then he went over to the islet to complain. So he was right about one thing and wrong about another. That's a good average for a husband.”

When you walk off mid-sentence

  • “Off you go. My husband left in the middle of a sentence too. He's buried just there.”
  • “Rude. But I've had worse company. I've had his.”
  • “Fine. Leave. Everyone does, here. Some faster than others.”
