Talk

  1. “Rolf. I give out boats. One each, free. Volcano or no volcano, a man needs a boat. Especially a volcano. That's when you really want a boat.”
  2. “The road goes up to Cinderhold, then on up to the crater. Stick to the road. Off the road the ground's got opinions. Hot ones.”
  3. “People ask me, Rolf, what do you do if it blows? I say, I get in a boat. That's the advantage of the job. Everybody else has to come find me first.”
  4. “I bring the supplies over every morning. Magda's provisions, Torvald's coal. Torvald doesn't need coal. The mountain heats his forge for free. He orders it anyway. Says he likes the smell. I think he's lonely.”

Shop greetings

  • “Boats. One free. Engines cost gold. Gold melts at a thousand degrees. So you might as well spend it before you find out.”
  • “Back again. You smell like smoke. Everybody here smells like smoke. You've gone native.”

Quips

After you buy

  • “There's your engine. Runs hot. Everything runs hot here. She'll fit right in.”

When you can't afford it

  • “You're short. Engines cost what they cost. The volcano doesn't give discounts. Neither do I. We're very consistent out here.”

When you claim your boat

  • “There's your boat. Free. Keep her off the black sand. It's hot. She's wood. You can see where that goes.”

When your bag is full

  • “Bag's full. Lighten up. You've got a mountain to climb. Hot mountain. Steep. You don't want the extra weight.”

When you already have a boat

  • “You've already got a boat. Call her. She'll come. She'll complain about the heat. They all do.”

After you sell

  • “I'll take it. I'll leave it on the dock. Give it a week, it'll be a different shape. Still worth something.”

When it is sold out

  • “That's gone for today. More tomorrow. They come over on the morning boat. That's me. I'm the morning boat.”

When they don't buy it

  • “Can't use that. If it doesn't float, it's no good to me. That doesn't float. I checked. In the sea. It's down there now. Sorry.”

Before you can build a boat

  • “Name's Rolf. I keep the boats at the foot of the volcano. You know how a boat's made? No? Then I can't give you one. Gus's rule. Gus has never seen a volcano. Gus gets nervous near a stove.”
  • “You need the boat plans first. I don't make the rules. I just sit next to them. Out here sitting's dangerous enough. The dock's warm. Sometimes too warm.”

Once you can

  • “Heard from Gallows Rest. Gus got his plans back, and it was you that got them. So you get a boat. Free. Out here free is rare. Usually it costs you an eyebrow.”

Calling your boat

  • “Here she comes. Little soot on the front. That's not damage. That's the local look.”
  • “There she is. She knows the way in. She's not crazy about it. Neither am I. But here we are.”

When you walk off mid-sentence

  • “Ja. Go. The boat leaves when it leaves. So do people, apparently.”
  • “Walking off. Fine. The sea does that too. Then it comes back wetter.”
  • “Okay. I'll finish it for the gulls. The gulls never leave. They want my lunch.”
