Talk

  1. “Reuben. I give out boats. One each, free. This is the end of the island, so it's the start of the water. People forget that. Every end's the start of something. Usually something worse. But something.”
  2. “Over the water south-west is the Desert Isle. Sand, sun, a town called Last Chance. You can see it on a clear day. There are no clear days. But I'm told you can see it.”
  3. “Lose your boat, call her in. She'll come to this dock. She knows the way. She doesn't like it. But she knows it.”
  4. “I fish off the end of the dock in the mornings. Haven't caught anything in eleven years. The water's rusty. The fish are either very smart or very gone. I like to think smart.”

Shop greetings

  • “Boats. One each, no charge. Engines are extra. Everything worth having out here is extra.”
  • “Back again. Lost her in the fog? Just call her. She'll find you before the fog does.”

Quips

After you buy

  • “There's your engine. You'll get out of here faster. Everybody wants that. I don't blame them.”

When you can't afford it

  • “You're short. Engines cost what they cost. The waste doesn't do discounts. Neither do I.”

When you claim your boat

  • “There she is. Free. Keep her off the rocks. And out of the green water. And off the rocks.”

When your bag is full

  • “Bag's full. Lighten up. You don't want to sink before you've left. That's embarrassing. I've seen it.”

When you lack the recipe

  • “Not until you know how a boat's made. Gus's rule. Out here it's the only rule. So we keep it.”

When you already have a boat

  • “You've got a boat. Call her. One per customer. Two boats out here would just be showing off.”

After you sell

  • “I'll take it. I'll leave it on the dock. Somebody'll want it. Or the fog will.”

When it is sold out

  • “That's gone for today. More tomorrow. Supply boat comes in. Supply boat's me. I come in.”

When they don't buy it

  • “Can't give you anything for that. Nell might. Nell buys anything. That's her whole problem.”

Before you can build a boat

  • “Name's Reuben. I give out boats at the end of the waste. You need to know how a boat's made first. Gus's rule, over in Gallows Rest. I've never met Gus. But a rule's a rule. Especially out here, where there's only the one.”
  • “No plans, no boat. I'd bend the rule, but it's the only straight thing on this whole shore. I'd hate to be the one to bend it.”

Once you can

  • “Word came down the coast. Gus has his plans back, and it was you that brought them. So you get a boat. Free. Nothing's free out here. Except this. And the fog. Mostly the fog.”

Calling your boat

  • “Here she comes. Little green on the hull. That's not rust. That's the local colour.”
  • “There she is. Out of the fog like she meant it. She didn't. But it looks good.”

When you walk off mid-sentence

  • “Go on. I'll wait. I'm good at waiting. It's most of the job.”
  • “Walking off. That's alright. The fog does it too, and it always comes back.”
  • “Okay. I'll tell the boats you said goodbye. They won't care. They're boats.”
