Talk
- “Ole. I give out boats. One each, free. I'd give you a coat too, but I've only got the one. I'm wearing it. You can see how that goes.”
- “That path up the gorge, that's the only way up. Fella asked me once if there's an easier way. I said sure. Stay down here. He went up anyway. I liked him. Haven't seen him since. Still like him.”
- “Up top there's a lake, frozen solid. People go out on it to fish. Through the ice. They sit in a little hut and stare at a hole all day. I tried it once. The hole won.”
- “I came up here forty years ago for the quiet. Got the quiet. Turns out the quiet's mostly wind. Very loud wind. It's quiet in between.”
Shop greetings
- “Boats. One free. Engines cost gold. Gold's heavy, so you're doing yourself a favour, really. Lighter walk up the gorge.”
- “Back again. Still cold? Yeah. It doesn't wear off. You just stop mentioning it.”
Quips
After you buy
- “There's your engine. Runs fine. Hums a little. I think she's cold too.”
When you can't afford it
- “You're short. Up here gold doesn't grow on trees. Nothing grows on trees. The trees barely grow.”
When you claim your boat
- “There's your boat. Free. Keep her moving. A boat that sits up here turns into a sled.”
When your bag is full
- “Bag's full. Lighten up. You've got a gorge to climb. I've seen people try it with a full bag. I've seen them come back down. Fast.”
When you already have a boat
- “You've already got a boat. Call her. She'll come. Slowly. The cold gets into the engine. Gets into everything.”
After you sell
- “I'll take it. I'll leave it out on the dock. In the morning it'll be a block of ice with an engine in it. Still worth something.”
When it is sold out
- “That's gone for today. More tomorrow. If the boat gets through the ice. The boat's me. I get through the ice.”
When they don't buy it
- “Can't use that. If it doesn't float and it doesn't burn, it's no good to me. That doesn't float. I checked. It doesn't burn either. I checked that too.”
Before you can build a boat
- “Name's Ole. I keep the boats on this side of the ice. You know how a boat's made? No? Then I can't help you. Gus's rule. Gus has never been this cold. Gus makes rules from a warm chair.”
- “You need the boat plans before I hand anything over. I didn't make that rule. I just enforce it. Mostly by standing here. It's cold enough that standing counts.”
Once you can
- “Word came up from Gallows Rest. Gus got his plans back, and you're the one who got them. So you get a boat. Up here that's a big deal. Down there they just hand them out. Down there they're soft.”
Calling your boat
- “Here she comes. Little ice on the front. That's not damage. That's character.”
- “There she is. She knows the way. Better than you do. No offence. Better than me too.”
When you walk off mid-sentence
- “Hey! I didn't dismiss you! Fine. Dismissed.”
- “Walk away from a bosun. In the navy, they hang you for that. Here, nobody cares.”
- “Okay. Go. More coat for me.”
