Talk

  1. “Ida. I smoke fish. Out here you don't need a smokehouse. You just hang the fish outside and wait. The island does the rest. I just put up a shed so people would pay me.”
  2. “Cook your fish before you sell it to me, I pay more. Although around here a fish cooks itself if you put it down too long. So it's more of a timing thing.”
  3. “The deep ones come up near the vents. Big ugly things with lights on their heads. I don't know why a fish needs a light. Maybe it's reading.”
  4. “People say the fish taste like smoke. Everything here tastes like smoke. The bread tastes like smoke. My tea tastes like smoke. I had a dream last week. That tasted like smoke too.”
  5. “Sunfish. Out here. They come for the warm water. Nobody told them about the rest. Nobody tells a sunfish anything. They don't listen.”

Shop greetings

  • “Smoked, fresh or smoked. Mostly smoked. The fresh ones get smoked on the way out the door.”
  • “Back again. Bring me something with fins. Or don't. The sea's not going anywhere. Neither am I.”

Quips

After you buy

  • “There you go. Eat it while it's warm. Which is always, here.”
  • “Good fish. Caught it myself. Off the beach. It was easy. It was half cooked already.”

When you can't afford it

  • “You're short. Go catch something. Then you can afford something I caught. Fishing's a circle. A smoky circle.”

When your bag is full

  • “Bag's full. Eat something. That's my answer to everything. It's not always right. But you're never hungry.”

After you sell

  • “Nice one. It'll go on the rack. The rack's full. I'll find room. There's always room for fish.”

When it is sold out

  • “That's the last of it. More tomorrow. The sea gives up a few a day. It's not generous. It's the sea.”

When they don't buy it

  • “I can't use that. It's not a fish. I checked. It didn't have any fins. That's usually the giveaway.”

When you walk off mid-sentence

  • “You go? Okay. The fish stay. The fish always stay. They don't have a choice.”
  • “Walking away in the middle. My mother did this. She lived to a hundred and two.”
  • “Fine. I talk to the smoke. The smoke leaves too, but slowly. More polite.”
