How to Survive

Chapel pianist · Big island (Harbour Meadows), Meadowbay, chapel (Chopin Op. 33 No. 4).

Talk

  1. “Name's Cyril. I play the piano here. Same song every day. Fella in Gallows Rest plays a different one. We've never met. I think about him sometimes. I hope he's slower than me.”
  2. “It's a mazurka. Chopin. That's a Polish dance. Now, you're not supposed to dance in church. I checked. So I dance on the inside. Nobody's ever caught me.”
  3. “People come in to pray, and I'm playing. They don't complain. They figure I'm part of the prayer. I don't correct them. It's not my place. It's the church's place.”
  4. “I used to fish. Then my hands got too slow for fish. Turns out they're the exact right speed for Chopin. So the fish won, and Chopin won. I'm the only one who lost.”
  5. “Tavern fella asked me to play something cheerful once. I played this faster. He said that's not cheerful, that's just quicker sad. He's got an ear, that one.”
  6. “No sheet music. I keep it all up here. Not the whole song. Just where I am in it. The rest I trust to the piano.”

More talk

  1. “My teacher said play it exactly. The wrong notes too. Especially the wrong notes. I asked her why. She said her teacher said so. That's how you know it's important. Nobody remembers why.”

As the gods fall

Once the gods of 1 crypt have been beaten and their chests looted in your world (the Gang of Elites counts), every third talk:

  1. “Played it the same as always this morning. Sounded different. Not worse. Louder. Like something stopped talking over it.”

When you walk off mid-sentence

  • “Well! I wasn't finished. I'm never finished. But still.”
  • “Rude. In a chapel, no less. The piano saw that.”
  • “Off you go. Same song tomorrow. You won't have missed anything.”
