Talk
- “Name's Halvard. I play the piano at the edge of the cliff. It's a prelude. Chopin. Slow chords, all the way down. Like a man walking down the stairs. A man in no hurry to get to the bottom.”
- “People ask why build a chapel on a cliff. I say, so you can see the sea. They say, you can see the sea from the beach. I say, yes. But up here the sea can't reach you. Not yet.”
- “There's a crypt across the snow. Folks come out of it and walk up here and sit. They don't say much. I play. It's a short song. That's the nice thing about it. Nobody has to cry for long.”
- “Einar plays in Rimeholt. He plays the long one. I play the short one, a lot. We get the same amount of piano in a day. I just get more endings.”
- “The wind comes up the cliff and right through the walls. You can hear it in the low chords. I don't mind. It's the only one who ever sings along.”
- “My father said, Halvard, stay away from the edge. So I built a chapel on it. Now I'm inside. Technically, that's away from the edge. He'd have hated that.”
When you walk off mid-sentence
- “You go. The chords will still be coming down when you get back. They never land.”
- “Careful on the way out. Everybody leaves this chapel the same way. Carefully.”
- “Off before the last chord. That's the best part. It's also the end.”
